Separation anxiety disorder is a serious mental problem that occurs especially in childhood but can continue its effects in adolescence and adulthood if not intervened early. This disorder causes the individual to experience intense anxiety even at the thought of separation from loved ones, and can also significantly disrupt daily functioning. Separation anxiety is not only a problem that develops in the individual's inner world, but is also a multidimensional issue
intertwined with his/her social environment, family and life experiences. In this review, individual and familial factors affecting separation anxiety disorder are addressed from a multifaceted perspective. The extent to which many variables, from genetic predisposition to personality traits, from parental attitudes to family communication, are effective in the development of this disorder is examined with a literature-supported approach. At the same time, how the individual's temperamental characteristics, emotional regulation skills and traumatic experiences may be related to separation anxiety is evaluated. This study addresses separation anxiety disorder not only as a mental health problem, but also as a complex structure that emerges at the intersection of individual, family and environmental factors. In this context, both diagnosis and assessment processes and psychosocial intervention methods for the individual and the family have been examined in detail. The aim is to provide a holistic perspective to experts working in this field and to provide a solid foundation for future studies.
