Abstract

Child neglect and abuse represent critical threats to the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of children. Children with special needs are particularly vulnerable due to the complexity of their individual requirements. This study comprehensively examines academic research conducted over the past twenty years on the awareness levels of families with special needs children regarding neglect and abuse. Based on the classifications defined by the World Health Organization, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect, the analysis reveals that children with special needs are at a heightened risk of exposure to such adversities. The findings highlight that parental education level, socioeconomic status, and cultural factors significantly influence families' capacity to protect their children. The literature emphasizes the effectiveness of family education programs and social service applications in increasing awareness levels. While developed countries have successfully implemented awareness-raising policies, significant gaps persist in developing nations. Consequently, the expansion of social services and the implementation of public awareness programs are deemed essential. This study aims to contribute to the development of strategies for mitigating the risks associated with neglect and abuse. Future research should focus on evaluating the long-term impacts of awareness-raising programs and the effectiveness of policy implementations in this domain.
